Star Wars: Fit for a Queen

Attack of the Clones: While staying at the Lars homestead, Padmé forgoes her more formal gowns, opting instead to wear a more appropriate, casual ensemble. She wears a simple sky-blue dress with her long hair down. Over the dress, she dons a dark blue smock that was woven by a primitive culture she had visited. Highlighted by rainbow embroidery and tassels, the smock possessed a naive yet fresh quality that fit in in the deserts of Tatooine. Additionally, the smock's loose-fitting shape protected Padmé from the sand while still allowing her to remain cool.

Design: George Lucas is a strong believer in the idea that costumes should reflect the world of the character who wears them. In AotC, Padmé is seen as more of a person and less the powerful politician, as this dress demonstrates. In designing this gown, the three main designers all contributed. Dermot Power incorporated African, native ideas into it, Iain McCaig added his typical 'space nouveau' flair to the circular design, and Trisha Biggar designed the way the dress falls based on her knowledge of historical attire. The overall design of the dress, however, came from an unused handmaiden gown from TPM. McCaig says, "We knew we could use this one, since on Episode II we started to reveal more of Padmé, so it fit in well with that. Here she is with her hair down, and more relaxed look and a more revealing costume, especially the off-the-shoulders light blue centerpiece dress." He would also say, "One of the things I liked about the outline of this costume is that it kind of reminds me of a star. There she is: starchild, the ultimate queen of the universe, making her a very iconic shape." Originally in the concept art for this costume, the sleeves of this gown had large pockets sewn into them based on a medieval/Chinese design. These were eventually dropped, however, and replaced by a symbol similar to Amidala's royal crest.
