Star Wars: Fit for a Queen

Attack of the Clones: Returning to Naboo to secretly marry Anakin Skywalker, Padmé wears a beautiful yet relatively simple gown of beads and lace. The wedding, however, is an harbinger of disaster as Padmé and Anakin's marriage violates the sacred Jedi Oath.

Design: Though only in the movie for a brief scene, "The wedding dress was very important," Trisha Biggar has said, "But since it was a private wedding, George didn't want the dress to be too grand or elaborate. He wanted simple shapes and clean lines, with a slight Edwardian feel." Iain McCaig has also said that since the wedding is the cause of conflict as well as joy, he purposefully made the dress 'edgy.' To create this dress, Biggar considered lace from all over the world, but she found nothing appropriate, until she ran across a 100 year-old bedspread in an antiques shop in Australia. Since the vintage material was limited, Biggar successfully incorporated it with eleven off-white silk tulle pattern sections. Sandra Fullerton, an embroidery based in Sydney, used her talented team to create over 300 yards of French-knit braid for Cornely scrollwork, which joined and melded the panels.

The veil was made of Maltese lace, decorated with Edwardian wax flowers and beaded pearls. Pearls were then sprinkled over both the dress and the veil. "The final effect was a gown with very simple lines, with an antique feel to it," she said, "but at the same time it was quite intricate, and you couldn't quite put your finger on what it was made of."
