Star Wars: Fit for a Queen

The Phantom Menace: Like their queen, the five handmaidens wear beautifully designed gowns, though theirs are more subdued and allow the handmaidens to blend into the background. While in the Throne Room and later when receiving the Supreme Chancellor, the handmaidens wear pleated, mustard-colored gowns that pool at their feet and are secured by wide silk obis at their waists. Velvet veils and cloaks with hand-inked red detailing on the front and back complete the look and help to hide the handmaidens' identities.

Design: While the handmaidens' costumes are as beautiful as Amidala's, they were designed to help disguise the characters while the queen's were designed to call attention to Amidala. Therefore, the handmaiden gowns are loose and flowing, to hide any sign of age or shape. Trisha Biggar looked to art nouveau and Pre-Raphaelite work for this and other Naboo costumes, though this gown also has traditional Japanese features such as the wide obi.
